What do we offer?
A rewarding and challenging career
Your career in public schools will be more than just personally rewarding.
We can offer you an unparalleled variety of work, with mentorship, and ongoing support and training.
Your job is secure and your employment conditions are generous and flexible.
You can move from your classroom into other teaching related career areas, and back again. Within such a large organisation, opportunities for promotion are real and available for those with the right skills and leadership potential.
Working in the public education system can take your career to different locations across NSW. Start your career in a remote location and apply for an incentive transfer to another location after a required period of time.
Excellent starting salaries
A beginning four year trained permanent or temporary teacher working full time in 2010 will earn a salary of $54,749 plus superannuation and leave loading.
Salary increases are by annual increments subject to continued satisfactory performance, with the maximum salary for a classroom teacher rising to $81,656 in 2010.
From 2010, casual teachers will earn around $300 per day (depending on experience) which includes a loading in lieu of leave entitlements.
Our school leaders are well remunerated, with a head teacher or assistant principal earning a salary of $93,972 and a principal of a large high school earning a salary of $140,342 as at the start of 2010.
You can choose to increase the value of your take-home pay through salary packaging benefits such as cars, computers, mobile phones and personal superannuation payments.
Generous leave and working conditions
Permanent and temporary teachers have access to sick leave, family and carers leave, maternity and paternity leave, leave without pay and long service leave. You are not required to attend school during student vacation periods.
Our deferred salary scheme allows you to take a year off on 80 per cent of your salary to pursue other interests such as further study, overseas travel or industry experience.
Flexible working options such as permanent part-time or casual employment allow you to balance work, lifestyle and family responsibilities.
If you are appointed to one of our more remote, rural schools you may be entitled to a range of additional benefits and incentives.
